Abstract

The authors analyzed ultrasonographic features in 11 cases of the primary bile duct carcinoma, which were confirmed by operation and pathology.
The results were as follows:
1. Nine cases of the bile duct carcinoma were located in the common bile duct and two cases were in junction of the common bile duct and the common hepatic duct.
2. The neoplastic mass was detected in 8 cases (72%), and the echogenicity of mass compared with liver parenchyme was hyperechoic in 4 cases (50%), isoechoic in 3 (37.5%), hypoechoic in 1 (12.5%).
3. The contour at the obstruction site was abruptly cut-off in 5 cases (62.5%), indistinct in 2 (25%), and funnel in 1 (12.5%).
4. The level of obstruction was correctly indicated by ultrasound in 10 cases (91%).
